Project Overview
Architecture is often about building the future, but sometimes, its most profound purpose is to heal the past. When fire struck the Louisiana State University Student Health Center, it left more than just physical damage; it created a void in a vital campus resource. The interior was completely lost, erasing patient access areas, exam rooms, the injection clinic, urgent care, and essential testing labs. This was not merely a renovation; it was a resurrection.
The challenge was monumental. We faced the shell of a building whose infrastructure, precast concrete and structural clay tile, made modern space planning a complex puzzle. Furthermore, this historic building, a landmark on the National Historic Registry, had been designed to now-outdated medical codes. Our mission was to weave together a state-of-the-art medical facility within a historic framework, honoring its legacy while equipping it for the future of student care.

The Impact
From the ashes of the old layout, we envisioned a new, more intuitive model of care. Our strategic move was to create a central “core of services.” This innovative design placed the most critical functions, like the X-Ray suite, treatment rooms, and exam rooms, at the very heart of the building. A corridor flows around this core, providing access and connecting to flanking spaces that require more natural light, such as labs, urgent care, and offices.
This wasn't just about reorganizing rooms; it was about rethinking the entire patient and provider experience. The new layout is a testament to our collaborative process, in which we worked closely with LSU to deeply understand their needs. The result is a maximized floor plan that breathes with newfound efficiency and purpose, transforming a challenging space into a beacon of wellness.
Every project has its unique soul, and for the Student Health Center, that soul was steeped in history. Its status on the National Historic Registry meant that every design decision had to adhere to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. This was a beautiful constraint, a challenge we embraced with passion and precision.
Reusing the existing "shell" was a technical dance. With strategic planning and a creative reorganization of building systems like HVAC and electrical, we successfully fitted the university's ambitious programmatic requirements into the historic envelope without drastic alterations to its structure. This technical highlight demonstrates our deep respect for architectural heritage and our ingenuity in making it relevant and functional for today.
In the wake of destruction, our commitment was to build back smarter and safer. Efficiency for this project was measured in our responsible use of resources and our dedication to creating a healthy environment. We focused on maximizing the potential of the existing structure to minimize material waste during construction.
During the initial demolition, we uncovered and surfaced hazardous materials. Our team responded swiftly, managing the complete abatement and removal of all hazardous ACM throughout the building. This meticulous process ensured that the renewed facility would not only meet but exceed modern safety standards, providing a secure space for students for decades to come.
The true triumph of this project is painted in the numbers and the quality of care it now enables. The revitalized layout is a powerhouse of efficiency, providing six additional exam rooms and two additional nurses' stations within the same footprint. These additions, along with ample ancillary spaces, significantly increase the clinic's capacity to serve the student body.
Beyond just adding rooms, we brought the entire facility up to modern codes and standards, including full ADA accessibility. By resurrecting this historic landmark, we did more than repair a building; we collaborated with the university to create a space that inspires health and wellness, demonstrating that even from the greatest challenges, something beautiful and resilient can rise.
