Project Overview
Architecture is not merely a practical discipline; it is a canvas upon which we paint the aspirations, resilience, and dreams of a community. For Ingleside Methodist Church, nestled in the heart of the Capital Heights subdivision in mid-city Baton Rouge, the dream was born from profound loss. In 2007, a devastating fire caused catastrophic damage to the original sanctuary. When the smoke cleared, the only building element that survived the tragedy was the church steeple, a solitary beacon of hope standing amidst the ashes.
Our collaborative journey began with a deeply emotional challenge. We needed to partner with the congregation to create a new architectural expression that could heal a wounded community. The vision was twofold: the new sanctuary had to blend harmoniously into the surrounding residential fabric of classic Craftsman and Acadian Bungalow homes, while simultaneously casting a bold, visionary net to attract a new, younger congregation of families. It was an invitation to honor the past while designing a vibrant, thriving future.

The Impact
At our firm, we know that we are only part of the story. We pride ourselves on working closely with clients to deeply understand their priorities and spiritual aspirations. To spark this creative collaboration, our design team presented three distinct conceptual designs to the building committee, each thoughtfully responding to the church's programmatic needs. In a beautiful leap of faith, the committee chose the most contemporary design. They understood that to invite a younger generation into their narrative, the architecture needed to speak a modern, forward-looking language.
Every element of the new layout was orchestrated to embrace the community. Recognizing that Capital Heights was transitioning into a one-way street, we strategically oriented the building to directly face the neighborhood, opening its arms to pedestrian traffic. We lovingly restored the surviving historic steeple and proudly placed it at the corner of the site, surrounded by welcoming brick benches and clear signage. This created an inviting threshold, encouraging neighbors to gather, rest, and enter.
Furthermore, we wove deep spiritual symbolism into the very geometry of the space. The architectural concept creatively utilized the "Rule of 3s" dictating building proportions, establishing a comfortable human scale, and beautifully representing the Holy Trinity: The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit.
Transforming a vision into reality often requires navigating complex logistical realities, especially when building a new sanctuary on a compact site within a beloved historic residential neighborhood. Constructing a 7,800-square-foot facility among tightly packed homes demanded technical ingenuity and a deeply respectful approach to the surrounding environment.
Our team carefully orchestrated a complex ballet of deliveries, temporary road closures, and utility management to mitigate construction-related noise and vibration. Because we value partnership and transparent communication, the surrounding neighbors worked wonderfully alongside our design and construction teams. This incredible community synergy allowed us to overcome every hurdle gracefully, ultimately completing the construction in just seven months, beating the proposed schedule by approximately thirty days.
We believe that true efficiency means designing spaces that resonate with their environment while maximizing functional impact. The new sanctuary was meticulously designed to comfortably seat 300 congregants without overwhelming the delicate scale of the mid-city neighborhood.
By carefully considering building height and selecting a grounded, resonant material palette—incorporating warm stucco, traditional brick, and classic shingle roofing—we ensured the new structure felt entirely at home. The design respects the residential context, acting as a gentle architectural neighbor while still providing a highly efficient, expansive interior volume for worship and fellowship.
Our vision is to create spaces that inspire and delight, where communities can truly thrive. The restoration of Ingleside Methodist Church was an absolute imperative for the Capital Heights community, spiritually, mentally, aesthetically, and financially. It bridged a painful gap in the neighborhood's fabric and reignited the congregation's shared mission.
The true reward for our collaborative efforts was witnessed on opening day. Walking through the doors of the new sanctuary, attendees expressed overwhelming excitement, deep appreciation, and genuine happiness. We did not simply construct a building; together, we rebuilt a spiritual home. It stands today as a testament to resilience, a contemporary sanctuary ready to welcome generations of families for years to come.
